Vexile takes place in an alternate 21st century where robotics advancements have led to a significant shift in global opinion, particularly with the introduction of robotic enhancements to the human body. This development prompted the U.N. to impose a ban on further robotics research and development in 2067, which Japan fiercely opposed. As a result, Japan withdrew from international politics and adopted a policy of high-tech isolation, limiting its interactions to trade. A decade later, the American agency SWORD suspects Japan of continuing to develop banned technologies through the RACE network, prompting a special unit to infiltrate the country and gather intelligence.
